Spine, Lower, and Upper Body Mobility Workout with Coach Scott

A comprehensive stretching session with Scott to improve flexibility, strength, and alignment.

Stretch 1: Knee Rockers

  • Purpose: Improves thoracic, lumbar, and cervical rotation while enhancing hip mobility.
  • Steps:
    1. Lie on your back with feet and knees hip-width apart.
    2. Rotate your knees to one side while turning your head in the opposite direction.
    3. Maintain space between your knees and feet throughout the movement.
    4. Repeat side to side, letting your head rest gently on the floor for a smooth, controlled stretch.
  • Tip: Perform this stretch in bed first thing in the morning to leverage your spine’s natural decompression during sleep.

Stretch 2: Airplane Pigeon

  • Purpose: Enhances hip flexibility, lumbar and thoracic rotation, and eye coordination.
  • Steps:
    1. Sit with one leg bent at 90 degrees in front of you and the other bent to the side at 90 degrees.
    2. Use the opposite arm to reach toward the leading knee, bringing your elbow close to the ground.
    3. Rotate your torso and follow your moving hand with your eyes for improved thoracic mobility.
    4. Breathe deeply: exhale when reaching down, inhale when rotating back.
  • Tip: Switch sides to ensure balance, and integrate with your breathing for a more effective stretch.

Stretch 3: Thoracic Extension Stretch

Purpose: Focuses on opening the thoracic spine, correcting poor posture, and improving back flexibility.

  • Steps:
    1. Stack your forearms and rest your forehead on them while sitting or leaning on a counter.
    2. Gently lower your mid-back toward the floor, maintaining a straight and engaged core.
    3. Avoid dropping your stomach—focus the movement on the thoracic spine.
    4. Pump back and forth to enhance mobility in the ribcage and spine.
  • Tip: This stretch is ideal for counteracting the effects of prolonged forward-leaning postures like reading or sitting.

Key takeaways

  • Knee rockers: Relieve stiffness and improve spinal rotation
  • Airplane pigeon: Strengthen and stretch your hips and spine
  • Thoracic extension: Correct posture and unlock mid-back tightness
