Sit-to-Stand: Proper Techniques with Coach Cindy

Cindy Lurie, an occupational therapist, demonstrates sit-to-stand methods to enhance mobility and prevent injury.

Importance of Proper Technique

  • Sit-to-stand is a fundamental movement, crucial for daily activities and maintaining independence.
  • Correct technique prevents "plopping" into a chair and reduces strain on joints and muscles.

Sitting Down Safely

  • Positioning:
    • Approach the chair and turn completely until the back of your legs touch it.
    • This ensures proper alignment and prevents falling.
  • Controlled Descent:
    • Lean forward with your "nose over your toes" as you lower yourself.
    • Avoid using your arms initially to strengthen your quadriceps.
  • Soft Landing:
    • Lower yourself gently, leading with your bottom.
    • Slide back in the chair to avoid slouching.

Standing Up Correctly

  • Preparation:
    • Scoot forward to the edge of the chair.
    • Position feet flat on the floor, slightly apart, with heels just behind your knees.
  • Airplane, Not Rocket:
    • Lean forward with your nose over your toes.
    • Push upward in a controlled motion, like an airplane taking off.
    • Avoid standing straight up like a "rocket," which could cause imbalance.
  • Using Arms for Assistance (if needed):
    • Place hands on armrests or the seat for added support while pushing up.
  • Repetition and Practice
    • Regular practice improves muscle strength and stability, enabling a smoother, safer sit-to-stand motion.

Key takeaways

  • Proper positioning prevents falls and ensures safe transitions.
  • "Airplane, not rocket": Forward motion enhances balance and control.
  • Practice without arms to strengthen leg muscles over time.
