300 Reps with Coach McKenzie

Designed for individuals with Parkinson's disease, movement disorders, and older adults.

Introduction

  • Coach McKenzie welcomes participants to "Optimizing Exercise" by the Center for Movement Challenges.
  • Designed for individuals with Parkinson's disease, movement disorders, and older adults.
  • Safety is emphasized, with guidelines to ensure a safe exercise environment.

Safety Tips

  1. Clear your workout area of clutter and hazards to avoid falls.
  2. Keep a sturdy chair or exercise near a wall for support.
  3. Always go at your own pace; safety is the top priority.

Workout Overview

  • Focus on large amplitude movements with a "300-rep workout."
  • Equipment needed: dumbbells (2–3 lbs), a chair, and a foam pad or pillow (optional).
  • Includes arm and leg swings to promote mobility and blood flow.

Warm-Up Exercises

Arm Circles:

  1. Start with feet hip-width apart and arms extended.
  2. Move arms backward in large circles, then switch to forward circles.
  3. Bend knees slightly for added momentum.

Leg Swings (Forward and Backward):

  1. Hold onto a chair or wall for balance.
  2. Swing one leg forward and backward, keeping toes pointed upward.
  3. Repeat on the opposite leg, creating big, controlled movements.

Dynamic Movements

Side Leg Swings:

  1. Stand with support and swing your leg side to side.
  2. Focus on amplitude—kick as high and wide as possible.
  3. Perform 10 swings per leg, counting loudly for engagement.

Key takeaways

  • Safety first: clear your space, use support, and move at your own pace.
  • Large amplitude movements are key to enhancing mobility and coordination.
  • Engage fully—go bigger than you think with controlled, intentional movements.
