Eccentrics and Power with Coach McKenzie

A Fitness Class Tailored for Movement Challenges

Welcome to "Optimizing Exercise," a class designed for individuals with Parkinson's disease, other movement disorders, and older adults. This session focuses on eccentric and power exercises with safety and adaptability at its core.

Safety Checks

  1. Ensure a clutter-free environment, removing slippery rugs and small objects.
  2. Have a chair or wall nearby for added stability.
  3. Prioritize your pace and comfort during movements.

Warm-Up

  • Side Reaching: Step wide, reaching up to the ceiling.
  • High Knees with Reach: March knees high, alternating hand reaches.
  • Side Lunges: Step to the side, bending the knee and moving arms wide.
  • Jumping Jacks: Standard with large arm movements for amplitude.

Exercise Breakdown

  1. Eccentric and Power Movements: Slow, controlled motions paired with quick, dynamic actions.
  2. Key Exercises:
    • Eccentric pushups and jump squats.
    • Reverse flies and power jump lunges.
    • Turkish get-downs and push presses.
    • Power skaters and eccentric superheroes.
  3. Modifications: For each exercise, adapt movements using chairs, wall support, or reduced intensity to match comfort levels.

Cool-Down

  • Stretch Routine:
    • Forward bends and side lunges for inner thigh release.
    • Quad stretches holding a chair for support.
    • Hamstring stretches by flexing the toes upward.
