Synapse Partners With CFMC To Show How Physical Therapy Can Help People with Parkinson’s Disease

If you or a loved one is living with Parkinson’s and struggling with balance or fear of falling, don’t wait!

Introduction

Parkinson’s disease (PD) brings a unique set of challenges that impact mobility, coordination, and perhaps most critically, balance. As the disease progresses, individuals often experience increased difficulty with walking, maintaining stability, and avoiding falls. These issues not only affect physical health but also confidence and independence.

Fortunately, specialized physical therapy offers effective solutions to help individuals with Parkinson’s regain control and stability in their daily lives. We, at Synapse Neurorehab and Wellness, are strongly focused on balance therapy for people with PD and are uniquely equipped to address these challenges with personalized, creative, and evidence-based care.

Why Balance Is a Critical Concern in Parkinson’s Disease

Parkinson’s affects the brain’s ability to control movement, often leading to postural instability, slowed reactions, and a shuffling gait. As balance declines, so does the ability to perform everyday activities safely, like walking across a room, navigating stairs, or getting out of a chair.

Falling is one of the leading causes of hospitalization in people with PD. But it doesn’t have to be inevitable. Early intervention focused on balance training can significantly reduce the risk and improve quality of life.

How the Synapse Balance Program Works
1. Initial Functional Evaluation

A thorough evaluation pinpoints balance deficits, gait irregularities, freezing episodes, posture alignment, and functional limitations.

2. Customized Treatment Plan

You’ll receive tailored exercises and training including:

  • Gait training to improve stride, cadence, and reduce freezing
  • Postural and weight-shifting drills to build dynamic stability
  • Dual-task and cognitive-motor exercises for real-world functioning
  • Vestibular and vision tasks to enhance spatial awareness

3. Fall Prevention & Safety Education

Therapists will teach you safe strategies, such as rising from a fall, using adaptive devices, and recognizing risk zones in the home or community.

4. Incorporation of Specialized Protocols

When appropriate, LSVT BIG® and PWR!® moves are used to help people reclaim amplitude, strength, and mobility.

5. Wellness Follow-Up & Support

Once therapy goals are met, clients can transition into Synapse’s 1:1 wellness program for ongoing guidance in fitness, mood, sleep, breathing, and self-care routines to preserve progress.  We also work closely with the Center for Movement Challenges and highly recommend group fitness classes for comradery and additional support.  We can assist you in finding the right class for you!

Consistency Is Key

Improving and maintaining balance with Parkinson’s is not a “one and done” effort. Ongoing therapy, periodic re-assessments, and home exercise programs are all part of the long-term strategy. The 1:1 wellness programs and group classes are excellent ways to stay moving between rounds of therapy.
